Banfield Pet Hospital Coverage
Banfield Pet Hospital works very differently than the other pet insurance companies we have reviewed.
They do not have the typical accidental and insurance coverage but a network of Banfield Pet Hospitals that offer what they call their Optimal Wellness Plans.
These wellness plans are not only preventive but also include many services that are extremely comprehensive in scope.
And each plan allows you to have unlimited office vet visits and other services to keep your pet healthy.
If you are looking for only accident and injury coverage, then PetSmart insurance through Banfield is not for you as neither are included in their coverage.
All of their plans include a minimum of the following:
- Exams
- Diagnostics
- Surgery
- Hospitalization
- Treatments
- Accidents
- Illnesses
- Cancer
- Hereditary Conditions
- Chronic conditions
- Behavioral Issues
- Unlimited Vet Visits
- Dental Care
Banfield Pet Hospital Offers 3 Different Optimum Wellness Plans:
The plans are broken down by services offered and discounts that are applied to other treatment or services.
- The Essential Wellness Plan
This plan includes 2 physical exams each year, 2 vaccinations each year, diagnostic testing and de-worming. And you get a 10% discount on all other Banfield products or services.
- The Active Prevention Plan
This plan includes all of the services of the Essential Wellness plan and annual dental cleaning and urine testing. With this plan, you get a 15 % discount on other Banfield products or services.
- The Special Care Plan
This plan includes these additional services to those in the Active Prevention plan: 3 ex-rays each year, 2 eye pressure tests, and 2 electrocardiograms. With this plan, you get an additional 20% on other Banfield products or services.
Within each plan, you can add services to the wellness options such as spaying and neutering, some chronic conditions and more for an additional cost.

Luna
PetFirst saved his parents
$6,712
A happy energetic Luna one morning couldn’t hold her food down. After months of multiple costly vet visits to specialists and an endoscopy, the problem was discovered and fixed. Luna put 22 pounds back on in no time and her parents were grateful for having PetFirst by their side to pay the bills.
Banfield Pet Insurance Benefit Limits
With all of Banfield’s procedures, you are reimbursed 100% depending on the wellness pack that you choose.
Under all plans, you are reimbursed for unlimited vet visits, vaccinations and more depending on your level. This is really an excellent option for your pet to keep them healthy.
However, the downside is if your dog has a serious accident or unexpected occurrence that might cost you up to $10,000, you will not be reimbursed anything for that medical bill.
With any pet insurance plan, you would be reimbursed from 80 % – 90% of the bill after your deductible is met.
But if all you want is preventative coverage, then you are set.
Reimbursement Method
Banfield will reimburse you 100% of each treatment or procedure you choose depending on the level or wellness option.
For example, you will get a 100% reimbursement for teeth cleaning for your dogs and cats if you choose the Active Prevention or Special Care plan.
This can be a real saving when teeth cleaning can cost a minimum of $800. And most pet insurance will not cover dental care except for maybe a few providers that have wellness plans.
Banfield Pet Insurance Deductible Type
There is no deductible associated with any of the plans since it is not pet insurance.
This is similar in scope to most wellness plans in other pet insurance companies, but Banfield provides many more treatments and services.

What Is The Cost Of Banfield Pet Insurance?
Banfield Wellness Plans are lower in prices than most comprehensive pet insurance plans.
However, you do not get the full coverage or reimbursement if your dog or cat has an accident or injury that falls out of their choice of listed treatments or procedure.
On the other hand, their plans are extremely straightforward and you have many hospitals to choose from.
Depending on the plan you choose, the average starting monthly premium rates for dogs is $34 and for cats $25.
You can also get discounts of up to 20% on almost all other non-wellness services and procedures at Banfield pet hospitals.
If you have more than one pet, you can get a $15 discount on the membership fee for the plan you choose.
Banfield Claims Process
There are no claims to fill out with Banfield’s wellness plans. You simply go to one of the many Banfield pet hospitals located within PetSmart and you are covered!
Banfield Pet Hospitals have an excellent reputation and with 900 pet hospitals, it should be pretty easy to find a location near you.
The reviews have been mixed with some people loving Banfield’s plans while other people have complained about not being covered for an illness like their dog vomiting and the tests associated with it.
Enrollment And Waiting Periods of Banfield
There are no waiting lists to enroll in their wellness plans which is similar to all wellness plans.
They also do not have any age restrictions but most of the hospitals recommend that enroll your puppy or cat after a minimum of five months old to get accustomed to preventative care.
If you do enroll your dog or cat prior to 5 months old, they have both kitten and puppy plans to accommodate your needs.
