If you own a cat, you might think that because most cats are indoor pets, you don’t need pet insurance.

For the most part, if your cat remains healthy, that certainly can be the case.

With pet insurance for cats being relatively inexpensive, and if your cat gets one serious illness, having pet insurance can save you a lot of money.

Of course, you have to pay the monthly premiums and decide if those premiums offset the long-term costs.

However, if you have a pure breed, such as a Siamese or a Ragdoll cat (or even a mix of breeds), that is pre-disposed to hereditary or chronic conditions, then pet insurance can be helpful and worth the investment.

For example, Ragdoll cats are pre-disposed to heart disease and FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis), which can be very expensive to treat.

By having pet insurance, you can know that you can afford to treat any illness or condition that might occur. And that will give you peace of mind.

Make sure to insure your cat while he or she is young so that you will have the coverage you need before any of these conditions occur.

Pet insurance companies won’t cover your cat for any pre-existing condition that occurred before you enrolled in the new policy.

We came up with a list of all the different cat breeds and some conditions associated with those breeds to help you decide if pet insurance works for you:

When looking for a pet insurance policy, make sure the company you choose covers hereditary and congenital issues.

This is very important with these specific cat breeds (or even a mix of these breeds) to be covered for any condition that might arise.

Pet insurance companies like Healthy Paws and Petplan cover hereditary and congenital conditions in all their plans, while with other companies, like PetPremium, only cover these conditions in their upper tiered plans.

Our pet insurance comparison chart details which companies cover hereditary and congenital conditions and other relevant information.

If you suffer from cat allergies, you may want to consider one of the several hypoallergenic cat breeds.

Now that you know all about your cat breed and why pet insurance can be a real life saver and money saver for your cat, make sure to take a look at our list of the top 8 cat insurance companies.
