The American Wirehair occurred as a spontaneous mutation in the mid-Sixties among some barn cats in New York State. The mutation has since been documented elsewhere in the US, though in no other part of the world.
The defining characteristic is the stiff, kinked coat and whiskers. American Wirehairs are calm and easy-going, though they are great hunters of spiders and insects.

Should I Purchase Pet Insurance for My American Wirehair Cat?
With a lifespan averaging 14 to 18 years, these cats tend to be sturdy, and do not suffer from any breed-specific problems. They do however seem relatively more susceptible than other cat breeds to one potentially serious condition:
Feline Cardiomyopathy
All cats are at risk for cardiomyopathy, which is a term that encompasses four related conditions in which the muscles of the heart become weakened or fail to function properly.

Left untreated, cardiomyopathy often leads to heart failure and death. The condition is diagnosed based on a veterinarian’s examination for heart murmurs and other cardiac abnormalities. Treatment usually involves the administration of drugs that help to restore the heart’s normal rhythm.
